 Youth Orchestra Program Auditions

FYSO 2020-21 SEASON AUDITIONS ARE NOW OPEN!! 

Auditions are open to young musicians from ages 7 to 20; younger, talented players will be considered with recommendation from their private instructor. Entrance auditions for 2019-2020 Year are open for all instruments.

 

Audition Requirements

Audition duration is 8-10 minutes. Please arrive 15 minutes earlier to warm-up before the audition.

For Strings, Woodwinds, & Brass:
Bravi (Beginning/Intermediate Ensemble)

  • Prospective members should have minimum 1 year ongoing weekly lessons (or with teacher’s referral),

  • One prepared solo piece or etude,

  • One major scale of your choice, in as many octaves as possible.

Virtuosi (Advanced Ensemble)

  • Prospective members should have minimum 2 years ongoing weekly lessons,

  • One prepared solo piece in contrasting style and tempo showing your abilities and musicianship,

  • Two major scale of your choice, in as many octaves as possible,

  • Sight-reading is required for all instruments.

Percussion (both Bravi & Virtuosi ensembles)

  • Prospective members should have minimum 1 years ongoing weekly lessons,

  • One prepared piece or study to demonstrate your appropriate performance skills on snare drum and mallets,

  • Sight-reading is required.

Auditions for the 2019-20 season will take place in April and May. FYSO Staff Member will contact you with an audition time via email. A non-refundable audition fee $25.00 is due when submitting an audition request. For more information call 510-936-0570 or EMAIL.

Introducing the FYSO Strings & Brass Ensembles

In addition to the current youth orchestra programs, the Fremont Youth Symphony Orchestra proudly announces two new ensembles for the 2019-2020 Season - a Strings Ensemble and a Brass Ensemble. The new Strings Ensemble is for late beginner level and meets on Mondays while the Brass Ensemble is for intermediate/advanced level and meets on Sundays. Both ensembles meet weekly for just 1.5 hours.

Auditioning is not required.

String Ensemble

The 2019-20 String Ensemble Season runs from 09/16/2019 to 06/08/2020.

Rehearsal Information:

Location: First United Methodist Church, 2950 Washington Blvd. Fremont, CA 94539

Time: Mondays, 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm (exception for school holidays)

Skill Level: Late beginning level with 1.5 + years of prior lessons. Concurrent weekly private lessons required.

Payment and Enrollment

  1. Please complete the ENSEMBLE REGISTRATION FORM,

  2. Pay by check in the amount of $525.00 ($500 for tuition plus $25 non-refundable registration fee), payable to Fremont Symphony. Please note either “Strings Ensemble” or “Brass Ensemble” and the student's name.

  3. Mail or drop off check in sealed envelope to 3010 Middlefield Ave, Fremont, CA 94539.
    Please note: Parents are required to sign up for volunteer duties. Also, there will be an additional assessment of $45 for the Parents Discretionary Fund which will include a FYSO T-shirt and a concert gift award for your child at the end of the Season.

Marcella Schantz, String Esemble Conductor

Marcella Schantz graduated with honors from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. As a violinist, she has performed in numerous genres: orchestra, opera, ballet, shows, recording, film appearances, pop, rock, backup and more.

Marcella performs regularly with many Bay Area orchestras, including the Fremont Symphony Orchestra, Oakland Symphony, West Edge Opera and California Symphony. In Southern California, she performed with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra for 10 years, the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, and the Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra.

In addition to a busy teaching studio, Marcella has significant experience conducting youth orchestra ensembles and coordinating musical showcase performances.

Brass Ensemble

The 2019-20 Brass Ensemble Season runs from 9/15/2019 to 6/07/2020.

Rehearsal Information:

 Summer Program

Summer Ensemble Program

The inaugural class of the Summer Ensemble Program was made possible from a grant FYSO received from the Alameda County Board of Supervisors for the 2016-2017 Season with a Finale Performance in September, 2017.  Applications are now being accepted for the 2019 Summer Ensemble Program.

Program

The FYSO Summer Ensemble Program is a fun, interactive, and progressive approach that helps student musicians to improve performance skills in an ensemble setting.

Students will participate in one of the Instrumental Ensembles (String Ensembles, Wind Ensemble, or Chamber Music Ensemble) where they gain a better understanding and appreciation of different music genres and periods relating to world history.

Afternoon music theory classes and instrumental workshops are designed to help students learn the correct posture, tone projection techniques, and basic musicianship with emphasis on intonation, scales, efficient and effective practice methods, audition preparation and more.

Classes are conducted by Directors of the Fremont Youth Symphony Orchestra and professional musician from the Fremont Symphony.

  • Session I:  June 24th(Mon)– 28th(Fri), 9am to 4pm

  • Session II:  July 8th(Mon)– 12th(Fri), 9am to 4pm
